Tübingen – poets, philosophers, life and future
Small steps, narrow alleys and pointed gables shape the silhouette of old Tübingen all the way to its castle. The Swabian university city with its over 86,000 inhabitants and 28,000 students combines the flair of lovely and impressive half-timbered houses as the town hall at the market place with the ambience of a cosmopolitan student town. The city is and was home of worldwide known poets and philosophers, Nobel Laureate, distinguished physicians and the Global Ethic Foundation.
Tübingen is the “city of the mind” as well as a very successful and forward-looking business location. From time immemorial, many inventions, such as the Bunsen burner, the medical thermometer, and even the Black Forest cake originate from Tübingen.
Here, in the geographic center of Baden-Württemberg, coalesce the most outrageous contradictions: For local citizens it is normal that a drinkable “Viertele” Trollinger-vine is on the same menu like a tropical caipirinha and amid medieval half-timbered, young student life takes place.
Visitors and Tübingen particularly appreciate the Mediterranean atmosphere of the feel-good city by the Necker-river. Pretty outdoor cafés, Swabian-cozy wine taverns and traditional student pubs invite you to linger, look and chatter. Exquisite restaurants with Swabian and international food, family-run hotels with individual, distinctive charm turn a stay into an unforgettable experience. Even shopping will find a cozy place: many owner-managed shops, unique items instead of mass merchandise, individual advising, an alley of fair trade products, rummage in antique shops and bookstores, spectate traditional craftsmanship, all this can be experienced in the historic city of Tübingen.
The citizens of Tübingen are keen on pleasure and experience on a high level. Theater, film, music and art are included as well as picturesque markets and all sorts of other festivals and celebrations throughout the year. With the Umbrian-Provencal market in the late summer and the International Chocolate Festival „chocolART“ in winter, Tübingen has two incomparably beautiful market events.
The finishing touch to an eventful stay in Tübingen is undoubtedly a cozy circumnavigation of the wonderful little island amid the Neckar „Neckarinsel“ on the water. Because punting belongs to Tübingen as the „Hölderlinturm“ to the „Neckarfront“. Sit opposite to each other, lean back and relax, “schmooze” and enjoy the slow journey through the lush green banks along the romantic Neckar-Front, which is one of the most beautiful old town views in Germany.
